Crisis and Emergency

A mental health emergency is  a crisis situation where a psychiatric intervention is required. A psychiatric intervention is required:

  • When a person is experiencing an ‘acute’ episode due to substance abuse, extreme anxiety, depression or psychosis
  • When a person has had a suicide attempt
  • When a person has become violent or is experiencing rapid changes in behaviour

To access emergency mental health services in the Nepean Blue Mountains region, contact the Central Intake Line on 1800 011 511. The Central Intake Line is the first point of call for all Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD) / Hospital / Clinical services in the Nepean Blue Mountains region.

Blue Mountains Access Team (Mental Health Assessment and Acute Care Team)

The access team provides short-term management of people in a mental health crisis. The team conducts assessments for people in a crisis however once the crisis has been dealt with, the access team will either refer the patient to a General Practitioner to develop a mental health plan for ongoing support or book the client into an appointment with a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist is attached to the crisis team.

Blue Mountains District ANZAC Memorial Hospital

Blue Mountains District ANZAC Memorial Hospital is an acute hospital with inpatient and outpatient services. The hospital provides Emergency Services 24 hours a day, as well as a range of general inpatient services including:

  • Obstetrics and gynaecology
  • Paediatrics
  • General medicine and surgery
  • Rehabilitation
  • Geriatrics and
  • Palliative care

These services are supported by on-site pathology, medical imaging and pharmacy as well as a wide range of allied health services such as occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech pathology, nutrition & dietetics and social work. Outpatient clinics and services operating at the hospital include hydrotherapy, physiotherapy, dental, antenatal, psychiatry and sexual health.

Blue Mountains Inpatient Unit - Blue Mountains District ANZAC Memorial Hospital

The Blue Mountains Inpatient Unit is a public mental health clinic for people with an acute mental health problem as well as people are suicidal or cannot guarantee that they will not harm themselves or others. There is a social worker, occupational therapist and part-time psychologist working at the ward.

People who call the centre directly will be advised to call the emergency department or be directed to community mental health teams.

Central Intake Line - Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District

The Central Intake Line is the central access point for mental health services in the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD) Services. Upon ringing the line, the administrator will determine the purpose of the call and provide an assessment and triage service to either seek approval from a doctor to be admitted into one of the Local Health District (LHD) mental health services or to be referred to community services, counselling or a support group.

Crisis Access Team (CAT)

Crisis Access Teams (CAT) are acute teams that discuss any immediate mental health concerns and provide information about services that are available to assist. Following this contact, the person may be referred to other mental health services or staff from the team may provide short-term support.

There are acute teams based at Nepean Hospital and Katoomba Community Health Centre.

7 days a week between 8.30am-10.00pm (outside of these hours mental health staff from Nepean Hospital will respond to any mental health enquiries).

Hawkesbury District Health Service - St John of God

The Hawkesbury District Health Service (HDCA) is a private hospital that provides public and community health services. HDHS is two hospitals under one roof, a private hospital that also has a contract to provide public patient services. The HDCA has a community health centre and is a teaching hospital with the University of Notre Dame.

Nepean Anxiety Disorders Clinic

The Nepean Anxiety Disorders Clinic provides assessment and treatment for people who experience anxiety disorders. This service provides specialist psychological treatment for people who experience:

  • Panic Disorder
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
  • Phobias
  • Generalised Anxiety disorder
  • Health Anxiety
  • Social phobia and
  • Hoarding

The Nepean OCD Study is offered via the Nepean Anxiety Disorders Clinic. It is a study of people who suffer with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Associated with this study, the Department of Psychology offers information for sufferers and their friends, a bimonthly support group, a newsletter and other associated research.
