Counselling and Advice

Counselling and advice are all those services that provide advice, support and education to individuals and groups that provide them with strategies to deal with relationships, conflict and facilitate communication. In the Nepean Blue Mountains Region there are a number of services that help address a number of issues, raise awareness, make informed decision and faciltiate positive changes by working alongside individuals and families to meet their needs. The focus of information and advice is provided both over the phone or face-to-face to consumers in the mental health sector in the region, focusing on:

  • General Counselling
  • Family counselling (or family support services)
  • Financial counselling, information, advice, education and referral services
  • Mental Health Advocacy Service
  • Legal information and advice
Access to Allied Psychological Services (ATAPS) Children's Program - Nepean Blue Mountains PHN

ATAPS offers a subsidised program to assist low income families in providing psychological services for children experiencing emotional and behavioural difficulties. The services provided include a short-term, evidence based assessment and treatment, provided by a Mental Health Professional experienced in working with children and their families. The service provides children and their parents with up to 12 sessions per calendar year, including up to 3 sessions for a detailed assessment. Mental Health Professionals working with children and their families in this program include psychologists, clinical psychologists, social workers, and mental health nurses.

Children under the age of 12 years

Eligibility
Children up to the age of 12 years who meet the following eligibility criteria: are from a low income family (family has a health care card), are experiencing behavioural or emotional difficulties and are likely to benefit from short term intervention, have not been referred to psychological services under Medicare in the current calendar year and attend a GP within the region of the Nepean Blue Mountains PHN (this area includes the Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury, Lithgow and Penrith Local Government Areas).

In some areas, you may be charged up to $10 towards the cost of each session.

Access to Allied Psychological Services (ATAPS) Perinatal Program - Nepean Blue Mountains PHN

ATAPS offers a subsidised program to assist women experiencing perinatal depression and related disorders to access psychological services. The care provided includes short-term evidence based assessment and treatment, provided by a Mental Health Professional experienced in working with women with perinatal depression and related disorders. The service provides women with up to 12 sessions per calendar year. Mental Health Professionals working in this program include psychologists, clinical psychologists, social workers and mental health nurses.

To be eligible for an ATAPS referral, the person must be a woman who: is pregnant, or has a child up to 12 months of age, is experiencing perinatal depression or a related disorder, in which you are likely to benefit from short-term intervention, has not been referred to psychological services under Medicare in the current calendar year, attends a GP within the region of the Nepean Blue Mountains PHN (this area includes the Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury, Lithgow and Penrith Local Government Areas).

Anglicare Counselling

Anglicare Counselling is a professional counselling service that provides counselling to individuals and groups in an attempt to address a number of issues such as:

  • Communication difficulties
  • Family crisis
  • Relationship conflict
  • Relationship enhancement
  • Difficulties arising from family violence, sexual issues, depression, anxiety and other mental health concerns
  • Parenting issues

Child and Family Counselling Services have qualified and experienced psychologists and social workers who use a range of approaches that respect differences in individuals and families. The Credit and Debt Hotline is a telephone hotline that provides free legal advice and financial counselling to NSW consumers. Family Mental Health Support Service (FMHSS)

Family Mental Health Support Service (FMHSS) provides free, flexible support that is responsive to children, young people and families affected by, or at risk of, mental health issues, through access to a range of early intervention and education services. These services support parents to reduce stress and enable young people to reach their potential.

FMHSS offers the following services listed below:

  • Intensive, long-term (up to 12 months), early intervention support including assessment and identification of needs; practical assistance and home-based support; linking with other relevant services; and, targeted therapeutic groups.

Legal Aid NSW - Penrith

Provision of free legal information, referral and advice service dealing in criminal, family and civil law. The Penrith office assists people in criminal law; mediation and custody cases in family law; and bank issues, housing, tenancy, bankruptcy and Centrelink issues in civil law. Basically, legal aid works as a law firm that deals with people face-to-face to represent those who are not represented in local courts. There is also a criminal officer at Katoomba as well as an early intervention team that do outreach in Lithgow.

Mental Health Advocacy Service

Mental Health Advocacy Service is a telephone advice line that provides free legal advice on mental health law. A part time social worker is a part of the team to undertake assessments of people applying for legal aid in relation to community treatment orders and financial treatment orders as well as to conduct means tests and merit tests for people with mental illnesses. It provides a number of services to:

  • Provide advice for people with a mental illness, their carers or family members
  • Refer people with mental illnesses to the appropriate services in the community
  • Represent mental health consumers in inpatient setting
  • Represent involuntary patients when in front of a community order tribunal

Mental Health Nurse Incentive Program (MHNIP)

The Mental Health Nurse service is for people experiencing severe mental health disorders affect multiple areas of their lives. Your GP will need to do an assessment to determine whether the Mental Health Nurse service will suit your needs. The service can be provided in a range of settings, like clinics, your home, or in public settings (e.g. Supermarket) and will be provided at no cost to you.

The Mental Health Nurse will work as part of your primary care mental health team (GP and/or psychiatrist) to support you to stay well in the community. The care will be according to the goals and activities identified in the Mental Health Treatment Plan. To enable the provision of care, the nurse will:

  • establish a therapeutic relationship with you
  • liaise closely with your family and carers as appropriate
  • regularly review your mental state and inform your GP or your Psychiatrist
  • assist in monitoring compliance with your medication,
  • develop care plans and review as appropriate
  • provide information on physical health care,
  • maintain links and undertake case conference with GPs, psychiatrists and allied health workers such as psychologists
  • coordinate services for you in relation to GPs, psychiatrists, allied health and other health professionals
  • contribute to your planning and care management
  • liaise with mental health personal helpers and mentors, through establishing links with the Mental Health Personal Helpers and Mentors Program (PHaMs) and/or Partners in Recovery (PIR) Support workers where appropriate.

Official Visitors Program

Official Visitors are appointed advocates who visit people in mental health inpatient facilities and are available to assist consumers on community treatment orders. Official Visitors are independent from the health system and come from the community from a range of cultural, professional and personal backgrounds. They aim to safeguard standards of treatment and care, and advocate for the rights and dignity of people being treated under the NSW Mental Health Act 2007. Official visitors make regular visits to all inpatient psychiatric facilities across NSW. They:

  • Talk to patients.
  • Inspect records and registers.
  • Report on the standard of facilities and services.
  • Liaise with staff about any issues or concerns.

Springwood Drop-In Centre

The Springwood Drop-In Centre provides individual, children’s and family counselling as well as financial and problem gambling counselling free of charge.

Financial counsellors provide information, options, support and advocacy to people experiencing financial difficulties and assist them to take control of their financial situation.  All counselling staff hold professional qualifications, uphold privacy and confidentiality, do not judge and do not dictate what clients should do.

They also have meeting space available for community groups to use in the evening and office space during the day. There are opportunities for volunteering to work on reception and community projects.

West Connect Domestic Violence Services

West Connect Domestic Violence Services provides services to women and children whose lives have been impacted by domestic and family violence and related issues including homelessness.

West Connect coordinates four refuges in the Nepean and Blue Mountains regions and sub-contracts one in the Hawkesbury to provide crisis accommodation to women who need immediate, safe accommodation and support due to domestic violence. They also provide individualised support for lesbian, transgender and intersex women.
